1862 Richard Fothergill, M.P., and T. A. Hankey acquired the Plymouth Ironworks, consisting of four separate works, namely, Plymouth, Pentrebach, and Duffryn, and Penydarran, from the executors of Anthony Hill.
1872 Owner of the Aberdare and the Abernant iron works and the Plymouth works at Merthyr Tydfil
1875 As a result of the introduction of the Bessemer process, and owing to coal strikes, Fothergill's companies failed, as did many others; Llwydcoed and Abernant iron-works closed. These works were not operated after this date. The local iron industry was then represented only by a small tinplate works.
