Mr. Reid served a six-year apprenticeship in the Engineering Department at H.M. Dockyard, Devonport, during which he attended the Upper School for four years. After further practical experience in the workshops and on board H.M. warships and in the drawing office, he was appointed in 1919, a Lecturer in the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department at the Northampton Polytechnic.
He was awarded a Whitworth Exhibition in 1909, and in 1923 he graduated B.Sc. (Eng.), with first class honours, University of London.
In 1925 he became Head of the Civil and Mechanical Engineering Department of the Sunderland Technical College, and in 1928 became Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Borough Polytechnic. In 1930 he was appointed Principal of Paddington Technical Institute, and, in 1938, Principal of Sunderland Technical College. From 1939 to 1945 he was a member of Senate of the University of Durham.
In 1942 he read a paper entitled 'Training of Craftsmen for the Engineering Industry' before the North East Coast Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders.
In March 1945 Mr. Reid became Principal of the South East London Technical College, from which post he retired in August 1953.
Mr. Reid, who served as a member of the Education Committee of the Institution from 1946 to 1947, has been a member of several of the Advisory Committees of the City and Guilds Institute, London, and in 1933 he was President of the Association of Teachers in Technical Institutions. In 1948 he was President of the Association of Principals in Technical Institutions, and Chairman of the Council of the Association of Technical Institutions in 1949.
Mr. Reid became a Graduate of the Institution in 1913, an Associate Member in 1918 and Member in 1926.
