ERNEST MANNING, whose death occurred on 1st February 1932, was born at Liverpool in 1874.
He served his apprenticeship from 1890 to 1895 with Sir W. G. Armstrong, Mitchell and Company, Newcastle-on-Tyne, and worked in the erecting shops of Messrs. Laird Brothers of Birkenhead for a few months in 1896.
He then entered the drawing office of Sir Joseph Whitworth and Company of Manchester, where he remained until 1897, and subsequently was employed as draughtsman with the National Boiler Insurance Company of Manchester, later becoming a surveyor.
Mr. Manning then took up a similar position with the Engine Boiler and Employers Liability Insurance Company of Manchester (now the British Engine, Boiler, and Electrical Insurance Company).
In 1901 he was transferred to the head office staff and subsequently became an assistant engineer.
He had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1908.
