Eric Mensforth

From Graces Guide

Sir Eric Mensforth, C.B.E., D.L., F.Eng

Son of Holberry (later Sir Holberry) Mensforth

Eric Mensforth wrote an excellent book, 'Family Engineers', which looks at episodes in his own life and that of his father, and of other relations. It also gives a wide-ranging account of the activities of many other engineers and politicians, as well as notable engineering companies of the 20th century. The emphasis is on John Brown and Co[1]. The following biographical information is taken from that book.

He graduated from Cambridge and served a Graduate Apprenticeship at Mather and Platt, initially in their foundry at Salford Iron Works. He then became technical assistant to the general manager at Bolckow, Vaughan and Co. He was seconded for a period to work at Klockner-Werke at their Mannstaedt Works.

In 1933 he joined the English Electric Co and became Assistant Manager at their Bradford Works.

In 1937 he became General Manager and local director of Markham and Co.

In 1938 he went to Westland in Yeovil as joint Managing Director. During the war he also joined the Ministry of Aircraft Production on a part-time basis.
