Edward Henry Tabor (1866-1943)

1944 Obituary [1]

EDWARD HENRY TABOR was born in 1866 and after receiving his education at Rugby School served a three years' apprenticeship in the Crewe works of the London and North Western Railway under Mr. F. W. Webb and in 1886 entered the works of the Great Eastern Railway at Stratford as a pupil under Mr. James Holden, where he remained four years. He then gained experience in Canada and the U.S.A., but in 1891 returned to England and subsequently occupied positions as engineer with Messrs. Pearson and Company, contractors, and to the Bridgwater Estates in Lancashire until 1899 when he went to Egypt as resident engineer to Messrs. Ransomes and Rapier and was engaged on the construction of the steelwork at the Assouan Dam.

Shortly after his return to England in 1903 he joined the staff of the London County Council, in whose service he continued for twenty-eight years until his retirement in 1932, successively filling the positions of resident engineer, engineer in the main drainage department (of which he was placed in charge in 1915), and finally assistant chief engineer in 1926. He was a member of the Home Office Commission appointed to inquire into the Holborn gas explosion in 1928.

Mr. Tabor was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1887 and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1895. He received special recognition from the L.C.C. in respect of certain patents which he had taken out in respect of a form of tank for the purification of sewage. His death occurred on 28th July 1943.
