DOUGLAS COCHRANE MACCURRACH had a long association with John Booth and Sons (Bolton), Ltd., structural engineers, for whom he was London agent, and was also in charge of the City office of an associated company, Dreadnought Fireproof Doors (1930), Ltd.
He was born in 1876 and after serving for four years as a premium apprentice at the Tees-side Iron and Engine Works, Ltd., Middlesbrough, he joined Messrs. John Hill and Company, Ltd., of Newport, Middlesbrough, as a draughtsman. In 1903 he was made assistant engineer to the Cargo Fleet Iron Company, Ltd., and took charge of the remodelling of several blast furnaces and extensive coke oven plant. After further experience with structural steel firms in Yorkshire, he became in 1907 assistant London representative to Messrs. Francis Morton and Company, Ltd., constructional engineers, of Liverpool.
He took up his London appointment with Messrs. Booth in 1909. During the War he was attached to the Royal Engineers, and was employed in the drawing office at Richborough on the design of steel structures. More recently Mr. MacCurrach was responsible for the design of the structural steelwork for large factories. He was engaged on work of this kind until his death, which occurred on 10th July 1938.
He was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1901 and was transferred to Membership in 1923.
