J. & G. Burns set up a regular steamer service to the Inner and Outer Hebrides. This was sold to David Hutcheson and Co in 1851

1851 Formation of the steamer company David Hutcheson & Co which had three partners – David Hutcheson, Alexander Hutcheson and David MacBrayne.

By the mid-1870s, the service to the Hebrides formed the basis of David MacBrayne's company.
