Mr. Scott was educated at Consett Technical Institute, and served an apprenticeship as a metallurgical chemist with Consett Iron Co., Ltd., before joining the Ministry of Supply in 1940. He held positions of responsibility in metallurgical development laboratories at Royal Ordnance Factories.

In 1950 he joined the Mechanical Engineering Research Laboratory, where he has worked on the application of metallurgical techniques and electron microscopy to lubrication and wear studies; he is now a Senior Experimental Officer.
