Prof. D. C. Johnson, MA (Fellow) died recently at the age of 53.
Prof. Johnson was a graduate of King's College, Cambridge. He returned to Cambridge in 1947 as lecturer in the Dept of Vibration Theory for Engineering Use.
He was appointed Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Leeds in 1955, where he did research work on toothed gearing and on the mechanical behaviour of textile spindles. Seven years later he returned to Cambridge as Professor of Mechanics and set up research work on a number of aspects of damping machinery. He was later appointed Professor of Industrial Technology at Bradford University.
Prof. Johnson was particularly interested in research into problems of vibration and the suppression of noise from machinery and was the author of numerous papers.
Prof. Johnson's death will be a sad loss to the engineering profession.
