"CHARLES EDWARD DOUGLAS was born in 1871 and educated at George Watson's College, Edinburgh. He served a six-year apprenticeship with Douglas and Grant, Ltd., Kirkcaldy, engineers, after which he took part in the management for another year. He was next engaged as a designer to Fraser and Chalmers, Ltd., Erith, for some two years, before going to Manchester to take up the appointment of chief of the mechanical engineering department of Mather and Platt, Ltd. After holding this position for ten years he returned to Kirkcaldy to become managing director of Douglas and Grant, Ltd. During the 1914-18 war his firm was responsible for most of the plant and equipment for the dockyards at Rosyth and Invergordon and also for repairs to the battle and light-cruiser squadrons.
In 1923 he established the firm of Charles E. Douglas, Ltd., London, engineers, which he continued to manage and direct until his death, which occurred on 7th March 1951. Mr. Douglas had travelled widely, carrying out investigations and making reports on work for the Egyptian Government and the Empire Marketing Board. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1904 and transferred to Membership five years later."
