The RITTER CARL AUGUST VON FREY died on February 2, 1898, his 74th birthday. He was a leading Austrian authority on the metallurgy of iron. He was formerly director-general of the Alpine Mining Company, the most important metallurgical undertaking in Austria. He was elected a member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1881, and took a prominent part in organising the meeting of the Institute in Vienna in 1882.
