Canal Du Centre

From Graces Guide
February 1888. La Louvière hydraulic canal lift.

Canal in the Hainaut region in Belgium. Constructed by the Societe Cockerill.

The canal has four hydraulic boat lifts near the town of La Louvière, which are classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The lifts were designed by Edwin Clark of Clark, Stansfield and Clark. The lifts were no doubt inspired by the Anderton Boat Lift, and these lifts in turn influenced the construction of the Peterborough and Kirkfield Lift Locks in Canada.
