1941 Miroslav Sigmund formed an independent company, the Bren Manufacturing Company, at Gateshead to make components for the Bren Gun; he employed a group of workers who had escaped from the Brno factory which made the original light machine gun from which the Bren was derived.

1953 R. W. Crabtree and Sons acquired Bren Manufacturing Co. of Newcastle
