Berry Lane Viaduct
in Halifax, Yorkshire
This curving viaduct was built for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. It is of particular historic interest for the inclusion of cast iron girders of a type similar to those which failed on Stephenson's Dee Railway Bridge on 24th May 1847. Originally it would have comprised three cast sections, bolted together and braced by wrought iron tie bars. Two of the three sections have been recycled for use as a parapet, and the upper boss for the tie bar is visible.[1]. Thought to be the only survivor of a Stephenson-type trussed cast iron bridge girder, though relocated from its original, unknown position.[2]
Similar girders were used on the 1846 railway bridge over the River Ouse at York. Illustration here.
