Benjamin Frank Burford was born in 1883 and after serving a general engineering apprenticeship became a fitter with the London General Omnibus Co. He remained with this firm for sixteen years, occupying positions as Superintendent of various Depots and finally as Section Engineer at the Chiswick Repair Works.

In 1922 he was appointed Chief Engineer to the East Surrey Traction Co at Reigate, and held that position until his death. During the time he was with the Company the number of vehicles under his control increased from 30 to 400.

He died on 21st July, 1931, at the age of 48.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1924.
