- Imperial College of Science and Technology.
- Assistant Engineer with Humphrey Pump Co.
- Technical Staff of R.N.A.S., Air Board, and Air Ministry in succession during the War.
- Continued under Air Ministry in civilian capacity on aero engine research and development.

"Professor Benjamin C. Carter (Member), who was Chairman of the Southern Branch for the year 1944-55, died recently in Farnham at the age of 78.
He spent most of his professional career at the Royal Aeronautical Establishment working in the field of torsional vibrations and aircraft engine research. In 1945 Professor Carter went to India where he occupied the Chair of Applied Mechanics at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. On his return to England in 1949 he began work for the Ministry of Supply at the Fighting Vehicles Research and Development Establishment.
It is with deep regret the Institution records the passing of an old friend who has contributed so much to the engineering world."
