ARTHUR TOULMIN SMITH, born in 1848 at Highgate, died at Moscow on the 24th January, 1914.
He received his practical training under Messrs. Siemens Brothers, and was afterwards employed by them on the construction and maintenance of the Indo-European telegraph line.
In 1876 he was appointed manager to the Moscow Gasworks Company, and retained this position until the municipality acquired the undertaking. He then, as partner in the firm of Ludwig and Smith, became a manufacturing engineer in Moscow, and remained in this business until his death.
Mr. Smith was elected an Associate of The Institution on the 30th May, 1876, and was subsequently placed in the class of Associate Members.
