ARTHUR RICHARD HOARE was the principal of Messrs. Stephen Sellon and Partners, consulting engineers, of Westminster, and was chairman and managing director of the Isle of Thanet Electric Supply Company, Ltd. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1910 and was transferred to Membership in 1919. He was also a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. For some years he served on the Council of the Light Railways and Transport Association and on the Rails Committee of the British Standards Institution.
He was born in 1876 and received his education at Uppingham School and at the Crystal Palace School of Engineering. He was articled to the borough engineer and surveyor of Dover and on the completion of his articles received his first appointment as assistant engineer to the British Electric Traction Company, Ltd., serving under the chief engineer, the late Mr. Stephen Sellon, for whom he was engaged on the promotion, construction, and equipment of electric tramways and light railways in many parts of the country. Subsequently he became associated with Mr. Sellon for about thirteen years in the latter's private practice as consulting engineer.
During the war of 1914-18 he served in France with the Queen's Westminsters and later held a commission in the Royal Engineers. Upon Mr. Sellon's death, which occurred at the conclusion of hostilities, he became the senior member of Messrs. Sellon and Partners and since then had been actively engaged in an advisory capacity in connection with transport and electricity undertakings. The many positions he held included the chairmanship of the Kalgoorlie Electric Power and Lighting Corporation and directorships in several tramways and light railway companies, situated in this country and abroad.
His death occurred on 3rd November 1944.
