1949 Obituary [1]

"ARTHUR PERROTT was connected with technical education during most of his career.

He was born in 1887 and began to serve an apprenticeship in H.M. Dockyard, Portsmouth, in 1902, but in the following year he went to South Africa and completed his practical training in H.M. Dockyard at Simons town, where he continued as a fitter and turner for a further five years. He also acted as assistant teacher at the Dockyard apprentices' school. From 1913 to 1917 he was in charge of the engineer's drawing office and his activities also included the giving of instruction in machine drawing. He then began a connection with the Natal Technical College at Durban as an instructor and lecturer in engineering, but two years later he took up an appointment as works manager to the Beira and Mashonaland and Rhodesia Railways, which he relinquished in 1920 to return to the college at Durban as lecturer in mechanical and civil engineering. After holding this position for ten years he was made supervisor of studies. In the following year he became senior lecturer-in-charge and in 1938 was appointed head of the mechanical and civil engineering department. This position he retained until his death which occurred on 13th June 1948. Mr. Perrott was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1920 and was transferred to Membership in 1936."
