ARTHUR HATSELL OWLES, born at Saxlingham, near Norwich, on the 14th March, 1857, died from a fall on the works at Buenos Aires on the 13th January, 1913.

Educated at Beccles, he was engaged successively on the Northampton and Rugby Railway, the Preston Dock contract and the Manchester Ship Canal.

Later he acted as engineer for Scott and Middleton, first on the Great Central Railway extension to London, and afterwards on the Central London Railway.

He next represented S. Pearson and Son on their Admiralty Harbour contract at Dover, remaining until its completion, a period of 13 years. At the time of his death he was agent for C. H. Walker and Co on the Buenos Aires harbour works. He had devoted particular attention to the use of specialized plant for economizing labour on large contracts.

Mr. Owles was elected an Associate Member of The Institution on the 1st December, 1896, and was transferred to the class of Members on the 2nd December, 1902.
