1904 'Sewer Ventilating Columns. Since it has been found that under all ordinary requirements sewers may be adequately ventilated by means of tall shafts or columns, attention has been directed to the perfecting of the details of construction of these iron columns. One of the conspicuous faults which was common to the earlier types of column was the neglect to provide a rust pocket at the base into which the rust from the inner periphery could be intercepted. The result of this neglect was that the rust invariably blocked up the pipe leading to the sewer, rendering the column useless as vehtilator, whilst no provision was made for obtaining convenient access to the base of the column for purposes of inspection and cleansing, and for testing its working.
These inherent defects, we are pleased to notice, have been very successfully overcome by Mr. Richard Ames, of the Ames Crosta Sanitary Engineering Company, Limited, Nottingham, who has brought out a well-designed column, the upper portion which is formed of steel or wrought iron tubes with ornamental joints and galvanized wire cage and coronet, whilst the lower portion consists of heavy cast iron, the portion below the ground level comprising an inlet chamber for connection to the sewer. and a second chamber which acts as a rust pocket, for intercepting the scales. whilst the portion immediately above the ground level contains an access door of iron fitted with gun-metal lock hinges. Within this there is also fitted a transparent air-tight door, through which an anemometer may be inserted for testing the air currents, and immediately across the opening to the drain inlet is fixed a lug, which is described as the anemometer carrier, on which the anemometer can be fixed. When it is required to take readings the instrument is placed on this carrier, the air-tight transparent door is closed and the instrument may then be observed working under normal conditions, unaffected by external air currents, and absolutelv correct readings may be obtained.
This column, which is described as Ames' patent "testing and inspection sewer ventilating column", deserves the attention of all sewerage and municipal engineers.—Sanitary Record.' [3]
