"ALFRED JAMES WALKER in the course of his career had considerable experience as a teacher of engineering. He was educated at the Grammar School and the Municipal College of Technology in Manchester.
After serving his apprenticeship from 1894 to 1897 in the locomotive shops of the Horwich works of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, he continued his technical studies at Owens College, Manchester. Following a brief experience with Messrs. Ferranti's, Ltd., Hollingwood, Lanes., electrical engineers, he became under-manager to Messrs. Devoge and Company, Manchester, engineers. He began his career as a teacher in 1899, with the post of lecturer in engineering at the West Ham Technical Institute. Subsequently he successively occupied the same position at the Woolwich and Regent Street, London, Polytechnics.
More recently he had been resident engineer to Sir E. Williams, for whom he was engaged on the construction of reinforced concrete buildings. Finally, in 1945, he became associated with the Kilfrost Manufacturing Co. Since his retirement Mr. Walker had been living at Redditch, where his death occurred on 2nd February 1950, in his seventy-fourth year. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1901 and was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers."
