"ALFRED ERNEST SMITH was the chief engineer and general manager to the Ilkeston and Heanor Water Board for forty-one years, having held that appointment since 1908 until his death, which occurred on 28th February 1949, in his sixty-ninth year.
He received his education at the Manchester Municipal College of Technology from 1893 to 1895, and subsequently continued his studies at the Mather Institute and Owens College, Manchester. On the completion of a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Mather and Platt, of Salford, in 1901, he remained with that firm for a further seven years. During this period he was employed first as district superintending erector and later as superintending engineer. His duties involved a varied responsibility and included the supervision of a wide range of plant required for the execution of schemes both in this country and on the Continent. On the conclusion of this engagement he began his long association with the Ilkeston and Heanor Water Board. Mr. Smith had been a Member of the Institution since 1927."
