1936 Obituary [1]

ALFRED ERNEST COLLINSON was chief draughtsman and designer of Messrs. A. A. Jones and Shipman, Ltd., and was in particular responsible for the development of the various types of precision grinding machines and drilling machines manufactured by the firm.

He was born in Maskeliya, Ceylon, in 1882, but was educated in England and in 1895 he entered the works of Messrs. W. H. Allen, Sons, and Company, Ltd., as a premium apprentice.

Six years later he joined Messrs. Easton and Company, Ltd., of Erith, as an erector; he subsequently became a draughtsman with the firm and in 1905 he entered the drawing office of the Brush Electrical Engineering Company, Ltd., at Loughborough.

His long association with Messrs. A. A. Jones and Shipman dated from 1907, when he was appointed chief draughtsman, a position which he held until his death on 29th January 1936. During the War, the firm manufactured machine tools for the production of munitions and armaments, and Mr. Collinson was engaged on the adaptation of machines to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Munitions. Since the War, he had been responsible for bringing the firm's products up to date.

Mr. Collinson was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1911.
