MR. ALEXANDER RHODES was born in India about the year 1836.
He served his pupilage in the engineering. department of the Madras Railway Company, under Mr. G. B. Bruce, M. Inst. C.E. While there he manifested a peculiar aptitude for figures, and was found to be extremely useful in the preparation of estimates, as well as in the various calculations usual in an engineer’s office; and he subsequently published a book of earthwork tables.
On the completion of his articles Mr. Rhodes became an Assistant Engineer on the Madras railway, where he remained until the year 1858, when he entered upon similar duties in connection with the Great Southern of India railway.
In 1868 he left the Great Southern Company and was employed for two years on surveys and other works for the governments of Madras and of Travancore, but in 1870 rejoined the railway staff, and was engaged at Trichinopoly until July 1873, when he became an Assistant Engineer, 1st grade, in the Public Works Department of the Government of India, in whose service he remained until his death at the end of 1876.
Mr. Rhodes was elected an Associate of the Institution on the 6th of December, 1870.
