ALEXANDER CAMPBELL, O.B.E., LL.D., will be remembered for his energetic work as chairman of directors of the Hunslet Engine Company, Ltd., of Leeds, of which firm his father had been manager in previous years.
Dr. Campbell was born in Leeds in 1869, and took courses of lectures at the Yorkshire College, Leeds, during the time of his apprenticeship, which he served from 1885 to 1890, with the Hunslet Engine Company. He was subsequently appointed works manager, a position he held until the formation of the firm into a limited liability company in 1902. He then assumed the duties of director and works manager, subsequently becoming chairman of directors and retained that position up to the time of his death, which occurred on 14th March 1941.
During the war of 1914--18, he was a member of the management board of National Ordnance Factories in Leeds. In 1930, he was appointed president of the Engineering and Allied Employers National Federation, in succession to Sir Archibald Ross, and on the termination of that position he became a trustee and ex-officio member of the management board of that body. He took an active interest in Leeds University and was a Member of the Council from 1920 to 1940, and as chairman of the House and Estates Committee, he carried a major share of the responsibility for the planning and execution of building development.
The honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, in recognition of his services, was conferred on him in 1928. Dr. Campbell was elected a Member of the Institution in 1903.
