1949 Obituary [1]
"ALASTAIR DOUGLAS LIDDELL, whose death occurred on 29th February 1948, at the early age of thirty-two, was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1942 and was transferred to Associate Membership in the following year. He received his general education at Jordanhill College School, and obtained his technical instruction (which extended to ten years, from 1932 to 1942) at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow.
Entering the works of Messrs. Babcock and Wilcox, boilermakers, at Renfrew, as an apprentice in 1932, where he spent the remainder of his brief and promising career, he was, after five years' training, employed for a brief period as mechanical research assistant. He was then appointed engineering draughtsman with responsibility for the general arrangement of a complete boiler plant and the design of parts of water-tube boilers. His final position, which dated from 1942, was that of mechanical engineer and assistant to the works metallurgist, for whom his duties were of a varied nature, including the supervision of electric welding development and production for Government departments, in addition to the design of jigs and fixtures, and the carrying out of experiments on constructional work generally."
