Dr. Wilson received a B.Sc. degree from Birmingham University in 1942, in which year he joined the Ministry of Aircraft Production as a junior scientific officer engaged in flight-test work.

In 1945 he returned to Birmingham University as a research student, but joined the lecturing staff of the Mechanical Engineering Department in the following year, which position he held until 1951. For research work on gas dynamics during this period he was awarded the degree of Ph.D. in 1950.

He subsequently joined Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. (Metals Division) and was appointed lubricants engineer in 1953.
