JACKSON, Ethel. Proprietor, Borough Garage, Otley, Yorks. Born Leathley, 27th August, 1896. Educated at Pool Village School, and Fishergate, York. First connected with Motor Industry on marriage to the late Rowland Jackson in 1923. Acted as Secretary to the firm which he had founded in 1920. Prior to this had worked Capstan Lathes making adaptors for fuse bodies and worked machines for Shrapnel discs at Dawson, Payne & Elliott Ltd. Engaged in fitting, tuning, and general engineering work for Marine Engineering firm and later in charge of marine installation work in shipyards all over the country. Joined Motor Industry, 1923, becoming partner in a business in Chichester. Managed the business but did everything else as well; was pump attendant, taxi-driver and mechanic. JAMES, William Gilbert, M.I.MECH.E. Chairman and Managing Director, W. G. James Ltd., N.W.I. Born Maldon, 12th August, 1865. Bought his first bicycle—a boneshaker—in 1876. Competed successfully on high and " safety " bicycles on track and road. Founded firm of Thomson and James, 1888. Sold interests in 1898. Became Manager of Crypto Works Co., 1899, making valves, etc. for Internal Combustion Engines. Founder Member of Institute of Automobile Engineers (formerly the Cycle Engineers) now absorbed in Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Only surviving founder member of Bath Road Club; Founder Member of the Roadfarers' Club; Founder Member of the Herts County Automobile Club. Became an apprentice with Clayton Wagons Ltd., in 1927, working in Buying Dept., in Jig and Tool Drawing Office, and on design of wire-wound still tubes and wire-winding machines. Company was taken over by present firm in 1928 and he worked in D.O. until completion of apprenticeship in 1933. Began to specialise in vacuum and pressure brake equipment design etc. 1933-40. In 1940, 2nd in Command to Chief Draughtsman and design work included Flame throwers, Tank equipment, and the " Hamilcar " glider. In 1946 took charge of design on Vacuum and air pressure equipment sections. Became Brake Designer, 1949. Visited U.S.A., 1951, to deal with technical side of business agreements. JOY, Bertram Charles, M.I.MECH.E. Technical consultant, designer, inventor (retired). Born 2nd Jan., 1876. Educated at Blatchington Court School and Aldenham School. Commenced business career in his father's (David Joy's) office as draughtsman. In 1895 joined Simms & Co., designing several early petrol engines successfully adapted to Motor Cars. These were among the first built in England. In 1900 appointed Chief Draughtsman, Simms Manfg. Co. In 1907 started own business in Kingsway as Consultant, this was interrupted by 1914 war but continued afterwards in Regent Street and Westminster—a total period of 14 years.
