Educated at George Watson's College. Became a Chartered Accountant and joined S.M.T.A. in 1934 as District Local Centre Secretary. In 1947 became General Secretary to the Association. FAIRMAN, John Eric George. Director of F. Fairman & Sons Ltd., Horley. Born Smallfield, Surrey, 15th March, 1913. Educated Reigate Grammar School. Studied engineering at Automobile Engineering Training College, Chelsea and gained Diploma. Started learning about motor cars some years before leaving school by working in spare time in father's garage business at Horley. 193234, worked for Daimler Co., Ltd. After assisting in family business, owing to father's illness, for 2 years, he joined Armstrong Siddeley Motors Ltd., Coventry, as Aero Engine Test Inspector. Rejoined business at Horley in 1938 and also enlisted in Territorial Army (A.A.). Mobilised August, 1939 and became 2nd i/c of A.A. Battery at Hull. Transferred to Royal Tank Regiment in 1942 to take more active part in the war. Was in the Normandy Operations and finished up at Kiel as Deputy Town Major. Demobilised in 1946, and in addition to the motor business took up Managing Directorship of Fairman Precision Tools & Products Ltd., Horley. Took up Motor Racing with Vintage Bugatti. Acquired 6 cylinder Riley in 1948, tuned with assistance of Freddie Dixon. Established Blandford Lap Record but crashed later. Competed with co-driver Eric Thompson in the 24 hour Endurance Races at Le Mans and Spa in 1949, with an H.R.G. and won the 11 litre class in each event. Was co-driver with Stirling Moss in the works Jaguar team at Le Mans 1951. Record distance covered in first quarter of race, but car retired with bearing trouble after 8 hours. FARBROTHER, Leonard Gordon. Proprietor of The Ninetree Hill Garage, Bristol. Born Fishponds, Bristol, 27th September, 1902. Educated at St. Nickolas with St. Leonards, Bristol. Served apprenticeship with The Albany Engineering & Motor Co., Bedminster, Bristol, for five years as fitter, turner & general engineer. In 1927 opened up on his own account as The Ninetree Hill Garage. Is now the Police examiner of motor vehicles for the Bristol Constabulary. FARMER, Harold Oatridge, M.C., B.SC., A.M.I.MECH.E. Born Port Elizabeth, South Africa, 1898. Educated at the University of Birmingham. Served during the 1914 war, on demobilisation joined Crossley Bros., Manchester. Subsequently took position with Ricardo & Co., Ltd., Shoreham, prior to engaging on compression ignition engine development with Commer Cars Ltd. Is an authority on High speed Oil Engines. Educated at Streatham, and served apprenticeship with Alexander & Sons, Kennington. Joined The Austin Motor Co., in London, in 1913, intended for the Sales Department. Did a year's training in London Service Department. Served in Royal Fusiliers 1914-1919, spending 21 years in France. Commissioned from C.S.M. in May, 1918, and was Asst. Adjutant in 11th Batt. Royal Fusiliers on demobilisation. 1920 went to France for Leylands on the clearance of the St. Omer dump. Later joined Princess Cars, Streatham, in charge of engine assembly. Spent several years on the Maintenance Staff of Daimler Hire Ltd., dealing chiefly with the carburation of the fleet, and in 193o joined Stromberg Motor Devices Ltd., Chelsea, on the technical and development staff. Then entered the service of Solex Ltd., and in 1935 joined The Zenith Carburettor Co., Ltd., in charge of the Stromberg Technical Section. During the 2nd World War was engaged on the development of tank engine carburettors, and in the technical administration of the Stromberg Injection System. Is the author of many books dealing chiefly with Carburation and has contributed many technical articles to "The Automobile Engineer." Interests : reading & music. FISHWICK, John Woods. Governing Director, John Fishwick Ltd., Manchester. Born Manchester, 4th September, 1894. Educated at Ardwick Higher Elementary School and studied engineering at Manchester School of Technology. Became an apprentice salesman with a Cotton Warehouse. Later became an apprentice wheelwright serving with his father's firm until his father's death. Firm was mainly responsible for maintenance of horse-drawn vehicles operated by the leading Bakery Firms in the City. To-day the business has changed to building and repairing Motor Bodies for similar firms engaged in food delivery etc. During 1914-18 war served as a "wheeler" in R.A.S.C. in Salonica.
