Served with the 51st Highland Division in Maginot Line and on the Somme and evacuated from Brest in 1940. Promoted Brigadier in 1941. Assisted in formation of R.E.M.E. as deputy to Brig. General Rowcroft in War Office. Served on Field Marshal Montgomery's staff as D.M.E. Awarded O.B.E. in 1941, C.B.E., in 1944 and twice mentioned in Despatches. Sales and Service Co., Ltd., was formed (after nationalisation of their bus interests) he became a member of the Board, continuing as General Manager. Served 5 years apprenticeship with Buckingham Gate Motor Works Ltd. In 1927 joined Car Mart Ltd., London, and worked in their Sales Dept. In 1934 joined Messrs. Adlards Motors Ltd., as Sales Manager and assisted Mr. Sidney Allard in designing and building the first Allard Special. During the 2nd World War was Stores Manager for Messrs. Adlards Motors Ltd., in their Army Auxiliary Workshops. 1946 was appointed General Manager to the Allard Motor Company Ltd., being responsible for the design and production of Allard Cars. 1950, took up present position. CANNELL, Bertram Sidney. Chairman and Managing Director, Moore of Brighton (1924) Ltd. Born Norwich, 1899. Educated at Newbury and Cambridge. Served during 1914-18 war in R.A.S.C. and in the Royal Flying Corps. Commenced on own account, 1921, at Hove. In 1924 purchased Moore's Ltd., which had been established in 1898. Operated Army Technical Training School for M.T.5., War Office, 1940-47. Since 1940 has been operating Army Auxiliary Workshops for the Ministry of Supply. Son of an Army Chaplain, came to England 1919; foundation scholarship to Marlborough College 1922; open mathematical scholarship to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge 1929; graduated 1932. Joined Cadbury Bros., 1932, leaving in 1937 to become manager of the Bentham works of George Angus and Co. These works produce brake-linings, canvas fire-hose and belting. Became Director of Telamite Ltd (a George Angus Subsidiary) in 1945; and Development Manager for the parent firm in 1948. Has also been a Director of George Angus (Canada) Ltd., since 1949. Vandervell & Co. for workshop training, transferring to John Lucas Ltd., Birmingham on amalgamation. Worked with two other electrical services companies before joining Globe and Simpson Ltd., as Branch Manager in 1939. In 1947 was appointed Director of Globe & Simpson (Manchester) Ltd., and in 195o as Managing Director of Globe & Simpson (Manchester) Ltd., and to the Board of Globe and Simpson, Ltd. CARDWELL, George Arthur Harridge, M.I.MECH.E., M.INST.T. Deputy Chief Engineer, Road Haulage Executive, 222, Marylebone Road, London, N.W.I. Born Devonport, 8th March, 1915. Educated at Stockport Grammar School and Dulwich College. Studied engineering at the London Polytechnic. In 1932 became an apprentice with Thomas Tilling Ltd., of Peckham. Left in 1934 continuing practical engineering training with Leyland Motors Ltd., and other manufacturers until 1937. Subsequently held engineering appointments with the Tilling Group of Companies until the war. Served in R.A.O.C. and R.E.M.E., 1939-46, attaining the rank of Lieut.-Col. in 1944, on appointment as Assistant Director of Mechanical Engineering, the War Office. Joined Eastern Counties Omnibus Co., Ltd., Norwich in March, 1946, as Assistant General Manager. Left to take up present position. Married, 1947; one son. Recreations; Lawn Tennis and Gardening. CAREY-HILL, Eustace. Deputy Chairman and Director-in-Charge of Dartmouth Auto Castings Ltd., Smethwick. Born Coventry, 28th December, 1882. Educated at Oundle School and subsequently studied engineering at Coventry and Binningham Technical Colleges. Worked with Beeston Cycle and Motor Cycle Co., Ltd., Coventry and left them to serve in the Imperial Yeomanry during the Boer War. In 1902 entered the foundry and general engineering business which in 1908 became Rowland Hill and Sons, Ltd. He occupied the positions of Technical Director, Works Manager, and finally Managing Director until in 1932 the business was acquired by the Birmingham Aluminium Casting (1903) Co., Ltd. Enered the Sales Dept. of the latter Company becoming Sales Manager. In 1942 was appointed Sales Director of his present firm, a component-manufacturing Company owned and controlled by Birmid Industries Ltd. Has taken an active part in the work of the Institute of British Foundry men and read many papers on foundry matters to Engineering Societies. Other interest is archaeology and he has read many papers to local societies on this topic. One of these on "Kenilworth Abbey" was probably responsible for his election to Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries of London. Is a past Master of the Mercers Company and the Tanners Company, two of Coventry's ancient Craft Guilds. Is also interested in History and Politics.
